EVANSTON, Ill. — Right before a snowstorm descended on Boston, a handful of Wildcats notched some of the fastest times in program history at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday.
The team kicked off the meet with several personal bests in a competitive women's 3,000 meters. In heat 3, first year Ava Earl executed her best college race to date by finishing second in 9:38.35, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Earl took 19 seconds off her previous personal best from the Gene Edmonds Invitational on January 8.
Teammates Emily Casaclang (9:52) and Deepti Choudhury (9:56) also dipped under the 10-minute barrier by finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Both runners improved on their personal bests. In the same heat, Whitney Currie made her indoor season debut by finishing 12th in 10:08. Fiona Lenth followed with a 15th-place finish in 10:22.
In heat 5 of the 3,000 meters, Elizabeth Bulat made her return to indoor track by placing fourth in 10:14. The sophomore took 29 seconds off her previous personal best in the event. In the same race, Katherine Hessler finished 12th in 10:43.
The women's 5,000 meters featured two all-time performances. In heat 1, Amanda Mosborg ran the seventh-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in program history by finishing seventh in 16:51. Her time is 19 seconds faster than her previous personal best from 2021. Behind Mosborg, Kalea Bartolotto placed 17th in 17:25, and Hannah Hall finished 19th in 17:38.
In heat 2, Lotte Van der Pol led for the majority of the race and ultimately secured a runner-up finish in 17:04, the ninth-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in program history. First year Maggie Mason ran her first indoor 5,000 meters ever, placing fifth in 17:26.
"We had several breakthrough performances on the track that made me very excited for the team and the direction of the program," head coach Jill Miller said. "Above that, I am most proud of the team's ability to be adaptable over the last month. Whether it be travel delays, COVID restrictions, or the winter storm we are braving here in Boston, they always find a way to give 100 percent of themselves and focus on the controllables."
The 'Cats will return to training for at least the next 2 weeks and resume competition at the Gately Indoor Track on February 11.
