Wildcats Drop Overtime Battle to Hawkeyes

1/28/2022 9:14:00 PM | Women's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats dropped a hard fought, overtime battle to No. 24 Iowa, 72-67.

Veronica Burton once again led the Northwestern offense with 19 points, in addition to six rebounds and seven assists. Laya Hartman followed with a career-high 14 points and Melannie Daley added 13. Meanwhile, Courtney Shaw locked down the Wildcat defense, picking up 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks; in addition to four assists.

Lauryn Satterwhite got the 'Cats off to a strong start, draining a three on the first possession. The Wildcats and the Hawkeyes traded points for the rest of the quarter, but the Northwestern offense was able to power ahead and take a 13-11 lead.

Melannie Daley got the Wildcats fired up in the second quarter, hitting two jumpers to spur a 6-0 run. Iowa quickly responded with a 6-0 run of their own, but Northwestern was able to hold them off with a three from Hartman and a three point play from Satterwhite. Going into the halftime break, the 'Cats commanded a 31-28 advantage.

Veronica Burton fired up the Northwestern offense and kickstarted a 13-4 run to open the second half. After nailing two threes of her own on back to back possessions, Burton assisted a Hartman triple. Caitlin Clark tried to single handedly bring the Hawkeyes back into the game, but the 'Cats held on to a 46-41 advantage going into the final quarter.

Iowa tied things up at 48 all early in the fourth and quickly took a slim lead. However, Northwestern wasn't going to let the Hawkeyes get away that easy. Daley hit a jumper with thirty seconds left to even out the score at 61-61 and send the game into overtime.

Unfortunately the Wildcats were unable to hold off the Hawkeyes in overtime, despite strong efforts from Burton. Daley also hit her first career three to finish off scoring for Northwestern.

Northwestern will return to the court next Thursday when they hit the road to face Purdue. The tip off is set for 6 p.m. central on BTN+.
