First Year Foundations: Preparing our Wildcats for Success

1/26/2022 10:38:00 AM | David G. Kabiller NU for Life Program

The Kabiller NU for Life program welcomed over 100 Wildcat first-year student-athletes to their annual workshop for the first time in over two years. An event planned and led by the NU for Life Advisory Group members.

"The most amazing part of this event is that our advisory group takes full ownership of the organization, delivery of the message and determining the desired outcomes for our first years" said Ahmad Boyd Assistant Director. " Although they've been on campus since September, this is the first year's formal introduction to Kabiller NU for Life, and it's important to educate them on all the resources available through our program."

Student-athletes learned the keys of professional etiquette in all communication (email, social media, in person conversations), in addition to having their headshots captured. They also had the chance to create a LinkedIn profile, and download our Branch app empowering them to be in control of their professional development journey. The event concluded on both nights with roundtable discussions led by members of the Advisory board answering a range of questions, from their internship search, to applying for the Kabiller Award.

"Being a part of Kabiller NU for Life has been so meaningful, and this event was such a success!" said Allie Berkery, an Executive Board Member and senior on the Women's Lacrosse team. "It is rewarding being able to work with the First-Years and introduce them to all that NU for Life has to offer, as it is such a unique part of the student-athlete experience here at Northwestern. It was also exciting to hold this event in person and see so many new faces".

First-Year Foundations is the beginning of a four-year curriculum for student-athletes through the Kabiller NU for Life program. They will receive mentorship, one-on-one career consulting, informational interviews, as well as access to internship and job opportunities.

"Kabiller NU for Life is a great career development resource for student athletes, and our goal with this event was to showcase all that the program has to offer, as well as introduce important resources to start first years on their professional development journey" said Lily Gilbertson, an Executive Board member and junior on the Women's soccer team. "Creating and executing the event was an awesome experience to be a part of, and seeing the interest and involvement being reciprocated by everyone was extremely rewarding!"

In the upcoming years, these first-year student-athletes will have the chance to network with numerous professionals and alumni, will experience I-MAP — a 3–5-day immersion experience in an industry of their choice (all-expense paid), and will have the opportunity to apply for the annual Kabiller Award, which offers standout student-athletes a $5,000 grant for use in professional development.
