Wildcats Take Down #10 Michigan State on the Road

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Northwestern picked up a crucial ranked win over #10 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon with a 64-62 win over the Spartans in East Lansing.
Playing shorthanded without their leading scorer Pete Nance, the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first half and withstood several second half runs from the Spartans en route to their first win in East Lansing in eight years, as well as the Wildcats third win over an AP Top-10 opponent under head coach Chris Collins.
Making his first start of the season in place of Nance, Ryan Young led the Wildcats with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two steals. It marked the second time this season Young led the team in points and rebounds. The redshirt junior came up especially big in crunch time, leading all players with 13 second half points in the final 20 minutes.
Young also recorded a game-high five offensive rebounds, and as a team Northwestern grabbed 17 offensive boards, including 10 in the second half. The Wildcats have now combined for 36 offensive rebounds in their last two games, the most in a two-game stretch under Collins and since at least 2010.
Also playing a crucial frontcourt role for the Wildcats was sophomore Matthew Nicholson, who eclipsed his career high for minutes played (11) in the first half alone, playing 11 minutes. The Clarkston, Mich. native finished the game with five points, six rebounds and three assists.
Chase Audige scored 14 points on a season-high four made three-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds, while Boo Buie also finished in double figures with 12 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
The Wildcats defense was swarming all afternoon, forcing 17 Spartan turnovers (including 12 in the first half) which the 'Cats converted to 16 points on the other end.
Northwestern returns home for its second-straight ranked matchup as the Wildcats play host to the #13 Wisconsin Badgers. Tip-off is slated for 8 pm CT on Big Ten Network, and it will mark the first Big Ten matchup in which students are welcome back into Welsh-Ryan Arena since March 7, 2020 (682 days).
