EVANSTON, Ill. — Following Big Ten schedule changes this week, the Wildcats stay home to throw down with Rutgers at Welsh-Ryan Arena Thursday. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. CT on B1G+ and WNUR Sports.
Northwestern enters the contest after an emphatic return to action last week. The 'Cats sent shock waves around the country last Thursday with a 77-69 road win over the then-No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes. Returning to Evanston on Sunday, Northwestern compiled another strong effort against Ohio State, which has received votes in the last two AP Polls, with a 24-point fourth quarter in a valiant comeback attempt.
Senior point guard Veronica Burton has shined to start the new year. The back-to-back Big Ten Defensive player of the year has earned second in the nation in steals per game with 4.14 and ranks 10th in assist-turnover ratio at 2.93. Over the last two games, she has posted the first back-to-back 'quadruple-nickels' of her career (count of five or more in four different statistical categories), averaging 20.5 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and 5.5 assists in those two matchups. Last year she accounted for half of the quadruple nickels in the Big Ten with three. She already has three this season.
The Wildcats face a Scarlet Knight squad that has struggled to begin Big Ten play. Rutgers stands at 0-5 in the conference and has dropped three straight games across all competitions. However, Northwestern and Rutgers have traded blows recently in the all-time series which Northwestern leads 6-5.
First-year and New Jersey native Caileigh Walsh gets her first crack at her home-state team Thursday. Sophomore Anna Morris, who grew up an hour away from Piscataway, will also look to strike again after scoring against the Scarlet Knights last year.
