Four 'Cats Qualify for ITA Super Regionals

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Four Wildcats qualified for the ITA Midwest Super Regionals with strong performances at the ITA Midwest Regionals singles and doubles draws in Champaign this weekend.

Graduate Ema Lazic, senior Hannah McColgan and first year Justine Leong all qualified for Super Regionals by reaching the Round of 16 in the singles draw, while McColgan and first year Sydney Pratt qualified as a doubles pair by reaching the quarterfinals. The Super Regionals take place Oct. 22-26 at Ohio State with spots for the ITA National Fall Championships on the line.

Those four Wildcats will be joined by Clarissa Hand, Christina Hand, Briana Crowley and Maria Shusharina at the Super Regionals, who had all already qualified through prior seeding.

Leong impressed with a 2-0 record in the singles draw, including a Round of 32 win over No. 4 seed Antonela Stoica in a three-set thriller with two tiebreaks, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-5 (1). Stoica played the majority of her matches at No. 3 singles for Wisconsin last season, while previously playing No. 1 singles for the Badgers in 2020 and No. 4 singles at Texas Tech in 2019.

Lazic punched her ticket as the No. 13 seed to the Super Regionals with a strong 6-4, 6-0 effort against Maja Pietrowicz of Michigan State. Pietrowicz went 9-3 in singles in the spring for the Spartans. Lazic played a strong second set against No. 8 seed Julia Andreach in the Round of 16, but could not advance to the quarterfinal.

McColgan knocked off the highest seed of any Wildcat on the weekend in singles to advance to the Super Regionals by taking down No. 4 seed Kasia Treiber in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Treiber was a five-star recruit first year for the Illini and ranked 30th nationally in the class of 2021. McColgan took the first set against Big Ten foe Madeline Atway in the round of 16, but fell to the 18th-seeded Buckeye 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

McColgan and Pratt finished off a perfect weekend in doubles as the No. 5 seed, taking out the No. 8 seeded team from Notre Dame and the No. 9 seeded team from Illinois in the process.
