Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood posted her first shutout of the season with a strong effort from her defense led by 90-minute efforts from center backs Emma Phillips and Danika Austin.
The Tar Heels are a perfect 4-0 to start the season and just defeated two Big Ten opponents in a row in their last two contests. They knocked off Illinois 5-1 and Ohio State 2-0 in a road trip last weekend.
Northwestern's last matchup against a top-five team in the country was in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, a 1-0 overtime loss to No. 4 UCLA. Graduate students Regan Steigleder and Nia Harris both appeared in the contest. The Wildcats last faced a top-ten team in the 2019 season finale, when they lost 3-1 to No. 10 Wisconsin. The program's last ranked win was a 1-0 shutout of Penn State during the 2018 season.
The 'Cats and Tar Heels have never faced off before, and NU is 2-3 all-time against ACC programs, defeating Wake Forest 2-0 in the last such matchup in 2018.
Michael Moynihan has never faced North Carolina as a head coach, but he squared off against the Tar Heels once at Milwaukee when he was an assistant on the Panthers staff in 1995.
