Wildcats Continue Early Season Road Swing at Butler

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern women's soccer continues its season-opening slew of road games with a trip to Indianapolis to face Butler on Thursday. Kickoff is at 6 pm. CT and will be streamed on Youtube on Butler Athletics' channel.
The Wildcats showed promise in the season opener, a 2-1 defeat to a strong Xavier side on the road. Junior Aurea Martin scored the lone goal on an assist from sophomore Josie Aulicino. First year Emma Phillips started and played the full 90 minutes in her first ever game as a Wildcat at center back.
Northwestern is 4-0-1 all-time against Butler with the teams last squaring off in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. In a memorable game that featured four future NWSL players (Kayla Sharples, Hannah Davison, Marisa Viggiano and Paige Monaghan), the Wildcats advanced in a penalty shootout, 3-2, thanks to a stellar performance from goalkeeper Lauren Clem.
This year's iteration of the Bulldogs is 0-1 after suffering a 5-0 defeat in their opener to a strong Michigan side now ranked No. 18 in the country.
Thursday night's matchup features a strong pair of opposing goalkeepers with stalwart Mackenzie Wood in goal for the 'Cats and Big East Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Stephanie Rodriguez between the posts for the Bulldogs.
Before their matchup in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, Northwestern head coach Michael Moynihan and Butler head coach Tari St. John used to square off reguarly as opposing numbers in the Horizon League. From 2006, when St. Clair took over, to 2011, when Moynihan departed Milwaukee for Northwestern, the Bulldogs and Panthers squared off nine times with Moynihan's side claiming eight wins.
