CINCINNATI, Ohio – Northwestern opened its season with a 2-1 defeat at Xavier on Sunday.
Xavier improved to 2-0 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 0-1.
Junior Aurea Martin scored the goal for the Wildcats in the 31' on a header thanks to a set piece delivery from sophomore Josie Aulicino. The goal was the fifth of Martin's career and the assist with the fourth of Aulicino's career.
The Wildcats led 1-0 after a hardworking opening 45 minutes. In the second, Xavier tied the game in the 53rd minute and took the lead in the 65th on a set piece header that deflected off a Wildcat. NU ramped up its pressure in the closing stages, culminating in a 90th minute shot from senior Regan Steigleder that forced a backpedaling save from the Musketeer goalkeeper.
Senior Mackenzie Wood started in net for the Wildcats and made six saves, including a spectacular free kick stop in the last few minutes of the game.
Junior midfielder Rowan Lapi led the offense with three shots on the afternoon, while Steigleder and Martin each took two attempts of their own.

The 'Cats will look to turn it around on Thursday with another Big East road trip, when they face Butler at 6 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on FloSports.
