DENVER – Three Wildcats were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday, highlighted by junior Michael Trautwein going to the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round.

Pitcher Tyler Uberstine was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 19th round and shortshop Shawn Goosenberg was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the same round.

Trautwein has appeared in 89 games over his Wildcat career and finished his junior season with a selection to the All-Big Ten second team. Trautwein led the 'Cats in 2021 with 35 RBI and boasted a .519 slugging percentage. He has also proven himself as one of the best defensive catchers in the country and led the Big Ten in 2021 with 15 runners caught stealing.

The Johns Creek, Ga. native is the fourth Wildcat drafted to the MLB in the last three years after three 'Cats were selected in 2019. Michael's father John played for Northwestern from 1982 to 1984 and went on to play for the Boston Red Sox in MLB in 1988.

Uberstine started in 12 games over two years with the Wildcats and struck out 51 batters in 60.2 career innings, including 36 strikeouts in 2021. In the shortened 2020 season, Uberstine allowed just .160 batting average against in 22 innings.

Goosenberg appeared in 87 games over three years at Northwestern and finished his career with a .326 batting average. The shortstop turned into an offensive powerhouse in his sophomore and junior seasons with an OPS each year above 1.100. Goosenberg was named to the All-Big Ten First Team in 2021 after finishing the season with a .708 slugging percentage, thanks in large part to 11 home runs in 28 games, including three walk-off home runs. He was named to the All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten third team in 2019, his only other full season in the Big Ten.
