Northwestern's Valiant Final Four Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Syracuse
5/28/2021 6:14:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
TOWSON, Md. – Northwestern's record-breaking season finally came to a close in a 21-13 battle against Syracuse in the semi-finals of the NCAA tournament.
Izzy Scane once again led the 'Cats with four goals and three assists, putting her at 98 goals on the season and 6.13 goals per game, well past the NCAA record of 5.71. Lindsey McKone and Jane Hansen followed behind with two goals apiece.
The 'Cats got things started and McKone grabbed the first goal of the game easily; but Syracuse responded and quickly built a 5-1 lead off a few turnovers and success in the draw circle. McKone got one more in edgewise before the Big Orange started to run away with it.
With just three minutes left in the half, Eve Hritzuk powered a shot to the back of the net from the eight meter. Scane followed suit and picked up the last goal of the half and the first goal of the second half. But that short 3-0 run was all she wrote for the Wildcats and Syracuse was able to maintain their advantage.
Facing a seven-goal deficit, Erin Coykendall found a goal and launched a comeback for the Northwestern offense. Hansen grabbed two straight goals and Scane found one more to cut the lead to just three with seven minutes to go.
The Wildcat charge was brought to an abrupt end when Syracuse once again took control from the draw circle. Northwestern's defense played a tough game, causing 10 turnovers while Madison Doucette recorded eight saves, but the Big Orange managed to come away with the win.
Northwestern will end their season with a 15-1 record and a Big Ten title under their belt. The 'Cats will remain in front of the nation in scoring margin with 19.31 goals per game and set another NCAA record (previous was 18.45 by Jacksonville).
