EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern student-athletes set a school-record with 114 Wildcats earning Spring and At-Large Academic All-Big Ten honors, breaking the previous program-record of 101 spring distinctions. The 2020-21 total of 349 recipients shattered the previous school-record of 288 honorees set last year.
The Wildcats have now matched or established a program-record for number of Academic All-Big Ten recipients in seven consecutive years. This marks the 11th consecutive year that Northwestern has eclipsed 200 student-athletes earning Academic All-Big Ten honors, and the seventh consecutive spring with 80 or more recipients.
Fencing tallied 22 recipients, the most in the Conference, while softball's 17 honorees and men's tennis' ten also led the Big Ten.
All eight of lacrosse and softball's First-Team All-Big Ten honorees also earned academic distinction. Izzy Scane, Lauren Gilbert, Lindsey McKone and Ally Palermo earned both honors for lacrosse, while Rachel Lewis, Skyler Shellmyer, Jordyn Rudd and Danielle Williams led the way for the softball program. Additionally, Irene Kim earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for women's golf after being named Big Ten Golfer of the Year last month.
Morgan Newport (softball), Brennan Dwyer (lacrosse), Allie Berkery (lacrosse), David Nyfjall (men's golf), and John Driscoll III (men's golf) all earned Second-Team All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors this season.
Eight Northwestern sports are eligible for spring awards. To be eligible for an Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution carrying a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
The conference office will also present the Distinguished Scholar Award at a later date. Qualifying students must be in at least their second year at their institution while earning at least a 3.7 GPA for the 2019-20 academic year.
