MADISON, WI. - The Wildcats team completed its spring season on Saturday in Madison, WI. The 'Cats walked away with two dominant victories.
Sophomore Rachel McCardell kicked off the Wisconsin B1G Invitational with a win in the 3,000 meters, finishing in a personal best of 9:33. The performance was McCardell's fourth victory of the 2021 indoor and outdoor track season and put her No. 1 on the Northwestern all-time list. Fellow sophomore Kalea Bartolotto finished third in a 9:41 personal best. She is now No. 3 on the all-time list.
In the same race, first year, Katherine Hessler finished sixth in a 10:04 personal best and sophomore Olivia Verbeke placed eighth in 10:07. Behind them, freshman Addy Vettel finished ninth and senior Mandy Davis finished 10th.
Minutes later, Clare Severe demolished the 1500-meter field. The senior followed the pacer through 800 meters and assumed the lead for the remainder of the race, reaching the finish line first in 4:25. Freshman Emily Casaclang followed with a runner-up finish in 4:35.
"I love watching the growth of this team while they make marks in our record books," head coach Jill Miller said. "We know this is just the beginning and what excites me is how much this team has learned. Their grit and competitiveness out on the track today is a direct reflection of that process."
The 'Cats will resume competition during the cross-country season this fall.
