EVANSTON, Ill. – On Wednesday the 'Cats will kick-off their postseason slate with the Big Ten Tournament. They will face Illinois for a third time season. The tip is set for approximately 12:15 on the Big Ten Network.
Northwestern had an impressive performance in Big Ten honors this season, highlighted by junior Veronica Burton being named Defensive Player of the Year for the second season in a row. Burton was also a member of the All-Big Ten First Team by both the coaches and the media. She was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team alongside teammate Sydney Wood. Meanwhile, senior Lindsey Pulliam had her fourth straight season of Big Ten honors, garnering All Big-Ten second team recognition.
Going into the tournament, the Wildcats are coming off a close loss to Michigan, 63-58. Burton put up 19 points to lead the team and Pulliam followed with 11. Junior Courtney Shaw made a return to the court and had an immediate impact, putting up nine points and grabbing seven boards.
The 'Cats pulled off a regular season sweep of both Illinois and Wisconsin in late February. In their first match against the Fighting Illini, Pulliam dropped a season-high 28 points en route to a 73-54 win. She put up 19 against them in their second victory, 67-61, while leading the team with eight rebounds.
If Northwestern manages to pull off a triple-game sweep against Illinois, they will advance to face Michigan on Thursday.
