'Cats Fall in Close Game Against No. 8 Maryland

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern fell to No. 8 Maryland at home on Sunday afternoon, 62-50, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Three Wildcats found double digits, junior Veronica Burton led with 15, senior Lindsey Pulliam followed with 13 and junior Sydney Wood posted 10. Burton also led the team with seven rebounds while Pulliam and Wood contributed six apiece. Northwestern's defensive prowess was on display as they held Maryland to just 62 points, their lowest total of the year so far.
The 'Cats got off to a slow start and Maryland found a four point lead they were able to maintain for the rest of the quarter. Pulliam, Burton and Wood put up four points apiece to keep the Wildcats competitive with the Terrapins.
The two teams traded buckets to start the second but Maryland started to pull away late in the quarter with a short 6-1 run. Northwestern responded with an 8-2 run of their own, highlighted by the first three of the game from Pulliam, to end the first half within the three: 30-27.
Maryland maintained their slim lead early in the third, despite Burton and Pulliam both reaching double digits and first-year Anna Morris' first career three. The Terrapins ended the quarter on a 9-0 run to give them a 10 point lead going into the final quarter.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the fourth with both first-years finding the basket, but the Terrapins responded quickly to maintain their 10-point advantage. The 'Cats fought hard to chip away at the lead, but time was not on their side and they were unable to take home a win.
Northwestern will hit the road for their final game of the regular season. The Wildcats will head to Ann Arbor for a match-up against Michigan on Saturday, the tip is TBA.
