EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern pulled off a dramatic 1-0 win over Indiana at Ryan Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon when Ugo Achara Jr. found the back of the net in the 88th minute. The 'Cats now move to 2-1 on the season with two-straight wins.
Achara's game winner secured Northwestern's first victory over Indiana since the 2011 Big Ten Tournament when the 'Cats prevailed 3-2 on penalties after finishing double overtime tied 1-1. The Nigeria native's goal came off a long throw in deep in Indiana territory that found its way into the box. Deng Deng Kur, who attended prep school with Achara prior to teaming up at Northwestern, headed the throw toward goal which Achara settled and struck for the win.
Achara has now scored three goals in the last two games and has the second most goals in the Big Ten. His seven points are also second best in the conference.
Northwestern fired eight shots in the contest with six of those on goal. The 'Cats have the best shot accuracy in the Big Ten, with 70% of their shots on goal. On the defensive end, they are holding there opponents to a paltry 42.2% shot accuracy. Indiana came into Saturday's match with the Big Ten's second-best shooting accuracy, but Northwestern's defense held the Hoosiers to just 29.4% shot accuracy.
Goalkeeper Miha Miskovic returned to the starting lineup and made five saves en route to the 16th shutout of his career. He is now tied with George Kokodynski for third in Northwestern history in career shutouts.
Chicago's Big Ten Team next takes the field against Ohio State in Columbus on March 7. Kick-off time is to be announced. The Wildcats will return to Evanston March 15 to face off with Michigan State.
