Maddie Smith Breaks School Record on Day Three of Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota -- Northwestern continued its historic performance at the Big Ten Championships Thursday, finishing the day at fourth in the competition with 424.5 points.
A day after setting a new school record in the 50 free, senior Maddie Smith replicated the feat in the 100 fly with a third-place finish, touching a time of 52.09. Smith's blistering time was the fourth Northwestern record to fall through the first three days of competition at the Big Tens.
Miriam Guevara, who set the previous record in the 100 fly two seasons ago, finished just behind Smith, taking fourth with a time of 52.24.
Ally Larson and Selen Ozbilen secured the other two top-ten finishes for Northwestern on day three as Larson took fifth and Ozbilen secured seventh in the 200 free. Both touched in NCAA 'B' Cut times for their season best finishes in the event.
Northwestern sent two swimmers to the bonus final in the 400 IM, the only other swim event of the afternoon. Ilektra Lebl took 11th overall while Annika Wagner took 13th with both athletes touching in NCAA 'B' Cut times.
Fourteen different Wildcats competed in swimming events Thursday with six qualifying for finals. Northwestern set a school record yesterday after sending 11 swimmers through to finals competition.
The Big Ten Diving Championships also began Thursday with the women's three-meter springboard. Markie Hopkins took sixth in the finals for Northwestern after the 'Cats sent six divers to prelims. Both women's and men's diving championships are being held at Purdue's Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center this weekend.
Northwestern continues action at the Big Ten Women's Swimming Championships tomorrow with prelims set to begin at 11 a.m. CT and finals at 6:30 p.m. CT. The men's three-meter springboard is slated to begin at 11:20 a.m. CT with finals at 5:35 p.m. CT in West Lafayette, Indiana.
