MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern earned a hard-fought 67-59 road victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers at Williams Arena on Thursday night.
Boo Buie led the way for the Wildcats for the second-straight game, finishing with a game-high 25 points, including 19 in the second half to help fuel the Wildcats' comeback. Buie was electric from the charity stripe all night as he finished a perfect 12-of-12 on the game, tied for the second-highest mark without a miss in program history behind only Jeff Grose, who went 13-of-13 on Dec. 21, 1987.
As a team, Northwestern made 22 free throws while shooting 81 percent from the line. It marked the Wildcats' most made free throws against a Big Ten opponent since Jan 12, 2016, when they also connected on 22 free throws vs. Wisconsin.
Miller Kopp turned in an efficient scoring output, finishing with 15 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and knocking down both of his three point attempts on the game. Ryan Young led the 'Cats on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds, while Pete Nance finished with seven boards of his own to go along with a team-high four assists.
After falling behind by as many as 14 early in the first half, the Wildcats mounted a 16-2 run to knot the game at 19-19 with five minutes remaining in the half. Six different Wildcats (Ty Berry/Nance/Buie/Robbie Beran/Young/Kopp) contributed with points to help jumpstart the run.
The Gophers finished the half strong to take a six-point lead into the break, but it was Northwestern that came out of the gates hot to start the second half. The 'Cats scored the first 12 points of the second half, all by either Buie or Kopp, to push the NU lead to six.
Minnesota battled back to take a one-point lead with 4:55 left in the game, but the Wildcats punched right back with back-to-back field goals from Kopp to take back the lead once and for all. The Wildcats made their final seven free throws of the evening to put the finishing touches on the road victory.
With the win, Northwestern has now won five of its last six meetings at Minnesota.
Northwestern returns home for its final two games of the regular season. The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday, March 3 to take on the Maryland Terrapins for the first time this season. Tip-off is slated for 8 pm CT, with coverage on Big Ten Network and WGN Radio 720 am.
