EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 21 Northwestern battled with Rutgers in a defensive affair but a late run from the Scarlet Knights handed the Wildcats a 70-54 defeat.
The Wildcats moved to 11-4 on the season and 9-4 in the Big Ten. Rutgers was playing its second game back after over a month of layoff and improved to 7-3 overall.
Senior guard Jordan Hamilton led all 'Cats with 13 points on efficient 4-6 shooting and 3-4 shooting from deep.
First year Paige Mott posted a career-high 12 points on 5-7 shooting and chipped in six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Junior Sydney Wood added 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.
Northwestern led for 10 minutes of the game and despite trailing by seven late in the third quarter, had fought back to make it a two-point game with just over five minutes to play. A late three in the shot clock from Tekia Mack gave Rutgers a five point lead they would not relinquish and they closed the game out on a run.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Columbus for a rematch with No. 12 Ohio State, who the 'Cats knocked off 69-57 at home last Monday, Feb. 1. Tip-off on Big Ten Network is set for 11:30 a.m. CT at Value City Arena at the Schottenstein Center.
