Wildcats Impress at Penn State Open

State College, PA - Northwestern Fencing took on some of the top fencing programs in the country at the Penn State Open, with six Wildcats grabbing top-ten finishes in State College.

Yejine Lee led the way in the foil, cruising through pool play and earning the No. 5 seed in the direct elimination round. She advanced to the quarterfinals after a 15-7 win over the No. 12 seed out of Temple, Sofia Molho. Joining Lee among the top finishers in the foil, Sarah Filby won her first direct elimination bout to secure a top-ten finish.

It was a similar story in the sabre - Kailing Sathyanath pulled off an impressive upset in the first round of direct elimination, defeating the No. 11 seed, Simona Nedyalkova out of Wagner, in a 15-11 win as the No. 22 seed in the field. She would add a 15-9 victory over No. 27 Abby Parker out of North Carolina to advance to the quarterfinals, with Thea Nguyen joining her in the top ten.

Athina Kwon led the way in epee, pulling off a pair of upsets as the No. 20 seed, including a 15-14 win over Erica Oake of North Carolina, to advance to the quarterfinals. Julia Falinska used a strong run in pool play and a 15-13 victory over Cindy Long of Temple to secure a ninth-place finish in the epee.
