Wildcats' Comeback Falls Short in Thriller at DePaul
11/21/2021 9:28:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHICAGO, Ill. – Northwestern came back from a 19-point deficit at DePaul to take a three-point lead in the final two minutes, but ultimately fell to the Blue Demons 78-75 at Wintrust Arena on Sunday evening.
It was another classic encounter between the two Chicago programs, where the Wildcats outshot the Blue Demons from the field and put up 18 more shots.
The teams traded haymakers in the final minutes, but a drive from Veronica Burton down two with heavy contact fell short and a later possession down three with 12 seconds left stalled out under the basket. DePaul had a 30-16 advantage in free throw attempts and its consistency at the line was another deciding factor.
First year wing Jillian Brown turned in a breakout performance with 16 points and three assists. Her classmate Mel Daley was instrumental in the comeback off the bench with 13 points, three assists and three steals. Brown was +6 and Daley was a team-high +8 in 23 minutes.
Burton did everything she could to will the 'Cats into the game, recording her fourth career quadruple nickel with 15 points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Senior forward Courtney Shaw tallied 14 points on a 7-12 clip from the field and added eight rebounds and three assists.
The Wildcats are back in action this week at the Paradise Jam at the U.S. Virgin Islands with three games in three days against quality opposition. The 'Cats face South Dakota on Thanksgiving, Pitt on Friday, and ranked Texas A&M on Saturday night. All the games will be streamed on Watch ESPN.
