WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite a strong second half of sustained pressure, Northwestern fell 1-0 at No. 18 Purdue on Thursday night.
The Wildcats dropped to 7-8-1 on the season and 3-5-1 in the Big Ten. Purdue, in the midst of a historic season, improved to 12-3-2 and 7-2-0 in conference play.
The 'Cats registered eight shots in the second half and had numerous dangerous balls into the box, but could not find an equalizer.
Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood was outstanding in goal, making eight saves and time and time again denying the Boilermakers a second.
The 'Cats have one game left in the regular season, with a win needed and help to make the Big Ten Tournament. Northwestern needs to defeat Ohio State and for TWO of Penn State, Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota to lose. In the event that teams are tied on points, Northwestern would lose in any tiebreaker unless it was with Penn State.
Penn State visits Michigan State, Wisconsin hosts Iowa, Indiana visits Purdue and Minnesota hosts Nebraska. Of the four opponents, Michigan State, Iowa and Purdue are all fighting for postseason implications, while Nebraska is not.
Sunday will also be Senior Day for Northwestern, as the program honors 12 seniors including two graduate students. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Martin Stadium but fans are encouraged to arrive early for Senior Day ceremonies.
