EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 6 Northwestern dominated Lakeside Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Michigan State Spartans.
Led by Bente Baekers, the Wildcat offense was unstoppable, firing off 28 shots and a whopping 11 corners. Baekers led the team with three goals and Roth followed with two of her own. Michigan State only managed five shots of their own under a stifling Northwestern defense.
Roth got the 'Cats on the board first with just two minutes left in the first quarter, capitalizing off a Maddie Zimmer rebound. The Spartans managed to find the equalizer with ten seconds to go and end the first quarter tied up at 1-1.
Bente Baekers wasn't having it and rocketed a solo shot into the back of the cage less than a minute into the second quarter. The Wildcat offense hung onto that momentum and Roth pulled in another goal for herself, increasing the Northwestern lead to 3-1. Michigan State rallied with a late goal, but it wasn't enough and the Wildcats maintained a one-point advantage going into half-time.
After a quiet third quarter for both teams the 'Cats lit up the cage in the fourth and final quarter. Baekers earned herself a hat trick, putting away two penalty strokes with ease. Casey Joye recorded her first goal of the season, slamming a great ball from Maren Siedel straight into the high corner.
Northwestern will hit the road to face No. 1 Iowa next Friday at 2 p.m. before returning to Lakeside field for their last match of the regular season next Sunday at noon against Indiana.
