Northwestern Topples No. 8 NC State in ITA Kickoff Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – Northwestern knocked off No. 8 NC State on the road, 4-3, to open the ITA Kickoff event on Sunday.
The 'Cats won the doubles point, and then received wins in singles from Clarissa Hand (6-0, 6-1), Briana Crowley (6-4,6-4) and Christina Hand (6-4, 6-2) to secure the overall match victory.
In doubles, Julie Byrne and Hannah McColgan, ranked 37th in the country, stunned the No. 2 ranked pairing nationally in an epic 7-6 win featuring an 11-9 tiebreak that not only clinched the set, but the team point as well. Christina Hand and Briana Crowley earned the first doubles set in the Wildcats' favor, 6-1.
The Wildcats now will take on No. 16 Wake Forest in a regional final tomorrow. The winner advances to the ITA National Indoor Team Championships, help Feb. 5-7 at Oklahoma State, featuring some of the top teams in the country in the eight regional ITA Kickoff winners.
