EVANSTON, Ill. - A school-record 106 Northwestern student-athletes earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the conference office announced Wednesday.
For the first time ever, all 19 varsity programs had at least one recipient of the prestigious honor. This year's total of 106 Distinguished Scholars shatters the previous school record (86) set in 2018-19.
"Our student-athletes continue to set the standard of success in the classroom, in their communities and in competition. This is one of the most prestigious academic distinctions in all of college athletics," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletic & Recreation Jim Phillips. "To have 106 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars is a remarkable testament to the unwavering commitment of excellence demonstrated by our student-athletes, their coaches and our academic support staff."
Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career. Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program.
Three programs led their respective Big Ten sports: women's basketball (six), fencing (12) and football (17). The 17 football honorees are the most-ever by a Northwestern program.
In addition to the distinguished scholar recognitions, Northwestern accumulated 200-plus Academic All-Big Ten awards for the 10th-straight year. The Wildcats finished the 2019-20 year with a school record of 288 student-athletes receiving the recognition for earning a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
