EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern matched a school-record with 60 student-athletes from five winter sports earning Academic All-Big Ten honors, the Conference office announced Monday.
The 60-recipient mark ties the school record that was set in 2017 and is only the third time since the inception of the Winter Academic All-Big Ten award that Northwestern tallied over 50 honorees.
"To match a school record in winter honorees while also winning Big Ten championships in basketball, swimming and wrestling is a testament to the world-class culture our student-athletes, coaches and staff have forged at Northwestern," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips. "The commitment and dedication these young men and women have displayed in the classroom, in the community and in competition places them among the best and the brightest in intercollegiate athletics. Our entire University community is extremely proud of their accomplishments."
This brings the 2019-20 academic year total to 187 after a league-best 127 Wildcats received the distinction in the fall. Northwestern is on pace to have over 200 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors for the 10th consecutive year.
In addition to winning the 2019-20 Big Ten title, Northwestern women's basketball tied for a league-high with 10 recipients. All five of Northwestern's starters earned the recognition.
The women's swimming and diving program boasted 19 representatives, which marks 12-straight years with double-digit honorees, while the men's program had 13 student-athletes achieve the award. Junior Calypso Sheridan, who took first place in the 200 breast and the 400 IM at the 2020 Big Ten Conference championship, was among the list of Northwestern women's swimmers.
Northwestern wrestling tallied 13 recognitions, including Big Ten champion (157 lbs) and overall No. 1 Ryan Deakin.
Four of the five recipients from the men's basketball program earned the honor for the first time.
To earn Academic All-Big Ten distinction, an athlete must be in at least their second year at the institution and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0-or-better.
The Office of Academic Services & Student Development is a vital force in supporting the athletic department's mission of providing a world-class academic experience for student-athletes by providing a comprehensive array of programs and services.
