EVANSTON, Ill. – Three Wildcats were named All-Americans by the United States Fencing Coaching Association on Wednesday, with five Wildcats also earning All-Midwest Region honors.
Sophomore Julia Falinska earned a spot on the epee All-America first team, becoming just the sixth fencer in program history to do so. Falinska now has two All-America honors in her first two years at Northwestern, a feat only five Wildcats have accomplished: Kate Rudkin, Julia Földi, Sam Nemecek, Christa French, and Dayana Sarkisova.
First-year Anna Biasco was named to the foil All-America second team while junior Sarah Filby was named a foil All-America honorable mention. Biasco becomes just the eighth first-year in program history to be named an All-American, while Filby joins Falinska as the ninth and tenth Wildcats to earn multiple All-America honors.
Northwestern has now produced a record three All-Americans for the seventh season in program history and for the third straight season under head coach Zach Moss.
All-American honors are awarded based on the fencer's overall body of work throughout the season as well as their performance at regionals. Falinska went 41-15 this season, and earned a third place individual finish in the epee competetion at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships. Biasco owned a 39-14 record on the season with a third place finish in foil at the MFC Championships, while Filby went 32-19 with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
Filby and Falinksa both also earned USFCA All-Midwest Region honors along with three other Wildcats in Blodwen Bindas, Emma Scala and Natalie Kim. All-Region awards are determined based on the results and field size at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
Bindas earned a team-best All-Midwest Region first team for her third place finish in epee at Regionals. Scala was named to the epee All-Midwest Region second team while Kim and Falinska were epee All-Midwest Region honorable mention. Filby was also an All-Midwest Region honorable mention in foil.
