EVANSTON, Ill. – Fencing assistant coach Eric Momberg earned a Spirit of Sport Award, as announced by USA Fencing last week.
The award recognizes members of the fencing community who have exemplified outstanding dedication to the sport and are an inspiration to other. Each quarter of the year, one recipient from the six regions across the country is recognized. Momberg was recognized for the third quarter of the 2019-20 season.
Momberg was also named Midwest Fencing Conference Assistant Coach of the Year in March.
Momberg was nominated for the award by former Wildcat fencer Lucia Procopio (2014-18), who now is an assistant coach at Wayne State.
"More than medals and championships, sport is about becoming the best version of yourself you can be. Eric believes in coaching not just the fencer, or even the athlete, but the whole person," Procopio said to USA Fencing. "He is creating not just good fencers, but good people."
Momberg has been involved with the sport of fencing for the past 25 years and been with Northwestern since 2016.
