3/9/2020 8:57:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

EVANSTON, Ill. - After a hard-fought 60 minutes, No. 6 Northwestern narrowly fell to No. 1 North Carolina 20-18 on Monday night at Ryan Fieldhouse.

The Tar Heels got off to an early 4-0 lead in the first half, but the 'Cats roared back.  Sophomore Izzy Scane broke through on an assist from junior Brennan Dwyer to put Northwestern on the board.  After one more North Carolina goal, Scane scored two straight unassisted to begin a 6-0 Northwestern run which resulted in a 7-5 lead for the 'Cats.  They entered the break on a 9-3 run, leading 10-8.

North Carolina started the second half hot, netting a quick five goals to regain a 13-10 lead. junior Lauren Gilbert fired back with a free position goal. Gilbert also matched her career high in assists, including one to Scane for. The two teams traded blows for the rest of the half but the 'Cats were unable to find a finish

Scane drove the offense for the 'Cats throughout the game. She scored five goals in the first half to tie her previous season high, then added three more after the break to best her previous career high of six. Her eight total goals falls just one short of Northwestern's single-game high set by Selena Lasota. Scane now leads the team with 29 goals on the season.

In addition to a strong offensive showing, Madison Doucette backed up a strong Northwestern defense. Doucette led the field and tied her career high with 11 saves.

Northwestern lacrosse will hit the road on Friday, when they take on Penn State in Nashville.  The draw is set for 1 p.m.
