EVANSTON, IL -- Northwestern men's tennis grabbed a pair of victories Sunday to cap off the busy weekend, 2-1. The Wildcats defeated Notre Dame 4-2 in the afternoon before going on to sweep UIC 4-0 in the evening's matchup.
NU started off the afternoon with a matchup against Notre Dame. Seniors Dominik Stary and Chris Ephron took the first doubles match, winning the last four games en route to a 6-3 win. The 'Cats followed up with another win, clinching the doubles point with a 6-4 win from sophomore Steven Forman and first-year Natan Spear, taking a 1-0 team lead.
Ephron took the momentum right into singles play, wrapping up his match quickly with a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-2) to take a 2-1 lead. After the Wildcats dropped a point, junior Nick Brookes retook the lead, 3-2, with a straight-set victory (6-2, 7-5). junior Trice Pickens clinched the 4-2 win in a three-set thriller (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). After falling behind 3-1, Pickens won five consecutive games to clinch the first set. Pickens jumped out in front again in the third set with a quick break en route to his victory.
Forman and Spear started off the evening matchup against UIC with a quick 6-1 doubles victory. Stary and Ephron followed close behind, winning their match 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles play, Forman made quick work of his opponent, allowing only one point scored against him through two sets. He finished his match 6-0, 6-1. Ephron earned his second singles victory of the day with a score of 6-1, 6-2. To clinch the third singles point and end the matchup with a win for Northwestern, Pickens took down his opponent 6-2, 6-2.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back on the court March 14 as they take on Indiana and Ball State in a Saturday doubleheader with matches at 10 am and 6 pm respectively.
