Wildcats Face Midwest's Best at NCAA Regionals

DETROIT, Mich. - On Saturday, 10 Wildcats competed in the 2020 NCAA Midwest Regionals hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy.
In sabre Abby Tartell, Abigail Swallow and Robyn Song represented the #B1GCats. Sarah Filby, Alyssa Chen and Anna Biasco competed in foil and Julia Falinska, Blodwen Bindas, Emma Scala and Natalie Kim fenced in the epee competition.
First-year epee fencer Blodwen Bindas led the team with a third place finish overall.
Abby Tartell posted the best finish among the sabre fencers with an eighth place finish, while Swallow and Song placed ninth and 10th respectively. Tartell, Swallow and Song each fenced two rounds of pools. In the first round, Tartell and Song went 3-2, while Swallow was right behind them with 2-3 performance. In the final pool, Tartell had a 5-6 record while Swallow and Song went 4-7 and 3-8.
In foil, Sarah Filby led the foil squad with a sixth place finish. Wildcats Chen and Biasco also had strong showings with eighth and ninth place finishes. In the first round, Biasco had an impressive 5-0 sweep. Filby and Chen had 4-1 and 3-2 records, respectively. In the final pool, Filby excelled with a 6-4 finish. Chen went 3-7 while Biasco ended the day with a 2-8 record.
In epee, Blodwen Bindas led the 'Cats with a third place finish. Scala, Falinska and Kim also had strong showings with sixth, eighth and ninth place finishes. In their first round of pools, Bindas, Falinska and Kim all had 3-2 showings, while Scala went 2-3. In the final pool, Bindas excelled with a 7-4 finish. Scala, Falinska and Kim had 6-5, 5-6 and 4-7 records, respectively.
Based on the regional results, NCAA will announce this year's championship qualifiers Tuesday afternoon. Qualified fencers will be competing in the 2020 NCAA Championships on March 19-20 at the TCF Center in Detroit, Michigan.
