RIO GRANDE, PR US — First year Irene Kim is one shot off the lead and the Northwestern women's golf program is tied for fifth at 4-over through one round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
Kim played a bogey-free round Sunday at the Rio Mar Country Club, holing a trio of birdies to post the best round of her young collegiate career with a three-under, 69. She reeled off seven-straight pars to start the round before back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. A birdie on No. 18 moved her to 3-under and into a tie for the lead and she closed her round with five-straight pars to shoot under 70 for the first time as a Wildcat.
Sophomore Kelly Sim gave NU a pair of players in the top 10 with an even-par, 72. Sim started strong with a birdie on her second hole of the day, but dropped a pair of shots with back-to-back bogeys on No. 9 and No. 10. Her fourth bogey of the day on No. 17 moved her to 2-over, but the second-year Wildcat responded with a birdie on No. 18 and her team-best fourth of the day on No. 3 to close the round for her team-leading sixth round of par or better this season.
