No. 9 Wildcats Take Down No. 1 Princeton, End NU Duals 10-2

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 9 Northwestern women's fencing team had a successful weekend hosting NU Duals, winning 10 of their 12 matches, including three victories over top ten ranked opponents.  

On day one  of the event, the Wildcats recorded wins against No. 10 Cornell, Duke, Fairleigh Dickinson, Incarnate Word and UNC. Day two featured two big upsets for the 'Cats, as they took down No. 1 Princeton and No. 5 Temple, along with UCSD, Dension and Detroit Mercy. 

Northwestern fell to No. 3 Notre Dame, 18-9, in the opening round. Sophomore epee fencer Julia Falinska impressed with a 3-0 sweep. 

In the second round, the 'Cats came out on top of a tightly contested battle with Duke in a 15-12 victory. The foil squad excelled, with first-year Anna Biasco, sophomore Alyssa Chen, and junior Sarah Filby all collecting two victories. 

The Wildcats collected their first top-ten victory of the weekend in the third round, taking down No. 10 Cornell, 17-10. Sabre fencer Robyn Song, foil fencer Biasco, and epee fencer Blodwen Bindas all had 3-0 sweeps.

NU dominated Fairleigh Dickinson, 24-3, in the fourth round. The saber and foil squads both cruised to 9-0 victories, with 3-0 sweeps from junior Zhesi Zhuang, first-year Hannah Marques, and junior Isabella Min, as well as foil fencers Isabelle Banin and Celia Crompton and Dhruthi Reddy.

Northwestern defeated Incarnate Word 19-8 in the fifth round, including a dominant 8-1 performance by the sabre squad.

The Wildcats won a close battle with UNC, 14-13, to close out Day 1. The match came down to the final epee duel, where Bindas was able to secure the victory for Northwestern.

To open a strong Day 2, the 'Cats took down Temple 16-11. Alyssa Chen had a 3-0 sweep.

In the second round of Day 2, the Wildcats suffered their second and final defeat of the weekend at the hands of No. 4 Ohio State, losing 14-13. The saber and foil squads both won their matches 5-4.

Northwestern made a statement in round three, taking down the top team in the country, Princeton, by a score of 15-12. The epee squad excelled, with Falinska and senior Adelle Berdichevsky collecting 3-0 sweeps.

In the fourth round, the Wildcats took down UCSD 17-10, led by a 3-0 performance from Biasco in sabre. Falinksa chipped in with a 2-0 record as a sabre subsitute. 

The 'Cats cruised by Denison, 25-2, in the dual designated for senior day recognition. Seniors Abby Tartell, Adelle Berdichevksy, and Shirley Luong went a combined 8-1. 

Northwestern capped off the weekend with an exclamation point, defeating Detroit Mercy, 26-1, including a 3-0 sweep from Ashley Gomerman.

The Wildcats now hold a 29-11 record on the season. 

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action Friday, Feb. 14 at the Junior Olympics in Columbus, Ohio.
