EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 14 Northwestern moved to within one game of a Big Ten title with a 69-55 win over Ohio State on Tuesday night in Columbus.
The Wildcats improved to 25-3 and broke a program record for most wins in the NCAA era, which began in 1980. They also tied the all-time NU record for wins in a season, set in 1978-79. A Northwestern win on Saturday against Illinois would give the 'Cats their first first conference title since 1989-90.
Abi Scheid led the 'Cats with 19 points on 5-for-7 shooting from three. The nation's leading three-point shooter improved to 49.3% from deep on the year with the performance.
Lindsey Pulliam added 16 points, marking the 25th time this season she has reached double digits in scoring. Sydney Wood nearly dropped her first-career double-double, racking up 12 points and nine rebounds along with three assists.
Scheid got things going for the 'Cats with a trio of threes early on. Pulliam found her groove later in the half, knocking down jumpers and getting to the free throw line at will.
Northwestern's defense held Ohio State to zero field goals over the final 4:33 of the first half, earning the Wildcats a 36-33 halftime advantage. Scheid led all scorers with 11 points at the break while Pulliam was just behind with seven points.
A Pulliam three-pointer from just inside of half court as the third quarter clock expired extended the 'Cats lead to 11. The shot ended a 9-0 run to close out the period that put the game out of reach for good.
The Wildcats shot 56.3% (27-48) from the field while holding the Buckeyes to just 34.5% (19-55).
