SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Kelly Sim opened Monday with a tournament record 67 and matched the third-lowest round in program history en route to building a commanding 6-shot lead through 36 holes at the Bruin Wave Invitational.

Sim sits atop the leaderboard at 8-under after her opening round 5-under, 67, and 3-under, 69, in the second round. The Wildcats have four players in the top 20 individually and are in second, just three shots back of No. 2 USC, at 9-over.

Fresh off their first victory of the 2019-20 campaign at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic two weeks ago, the 'Cats continued their momentum and captured the lead through the first round behind Sim's strong play. The sophomore from Edgewater, New Jersey, was six under on the front nine of her opening round, carding four-straight birdies to close the front with a 30. Her 67 is a season and career best and tied the third-best single round in NU history.

Sim ended the first day with 11 birdies in all, three clear of the second-most in the field through 36 holes.

Senior Brooke Riley (4-over), sophomore Kelly Su (6-over) and first year Irene Kim (7-over) are each in the top-20 through 36 holes as well.

Riley had five bogeys and failed to record a birdie in the opening round, but recorded one of just four eagles from the first day on the Par 5, 472-yard seventh hole. Riley responded with a 1-over, 73, ini the second round and played consistent, mistake-free golf, through the first two rounds with 26 pars — the second most in the field.

Su is tied for 15th behind a strong second round that included four birdies on the front nine. The sophomore made three-straight birdies to close the front nine and finished the second round with a 1-over, 73.

Kim — who earned her first collegiate victory at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic — rounded out the 'Cats in the top 20. The first year also carded a 1-over, 73, in the opening round and is tied for third in the field with 25 pars through two rounds.
