COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Northwestern women's fencing team was back in action at the Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, hosted by Ohio State University, with team competition on Sunday.
With strong showings, each weapon group made it into the final round. Sabre, foil and epee squads all faced Ohio State in the last round but fell short to the Buckeyes, 5-2, 5-2 and 5-4, respectively. The 'Cats closed out Conference Championships ranked second overall.
"I am really proud of how our team fenced this weekend," said head coach Zach Moss. "We fought hard, competed as one unit, and battled to the very end. We didn't get the results that we were hoping for, but our approach, process and culture were great. Those things will carry us forward and allow us to be successful at the highest level."
The sabre squad started off the day with a dominant win over Purdue. Ashley Gomerman, Hannah Marques and Isabella Min contributed to the 5-0 win. Next, the 'Cats faced Lawrence and defeated them, 5-1.
In the semifinals, the sabre squad faced the University of Chicago. With wins from Robyn Song, Thea Nguyen and Abby Tartell, the #B1GCats advanced, 5-1.
In the final, Northwestern faced Ohio State. Despite a 2-1 effort from Nguyen, the 'Cats lost to the Buckeyes and closed out the day ranked second in sabre.
In foil, the #B1GCats faced the University of Chicago in the first round. Isabelle Banin, Celia Crompton, Julia Shalansky and Dhruthi Reddy all contributed to Northwestern's 5-1 win.
In the semifinals, the Wildcats fenced Michigan and cruised through the round. NU beat the Wolverines, 5-0, with wins from Elina Moon, Sofia Simontov and Sarah Filby.
In the final, the foil squad faced Ohio State. Despite a strong 2-0 start with wins from Alyssa Chen and Anna Biasco, the Wildcats lost, 5-2, and closed out the day ranked second in foil.
In epee, once again, the 'Cats started out strong. In the first round, the epee squad defeated Michigan State, 5-0. Shirley Luong, Marta Amador Molina, Adelle Berdichevsky, Doreen Du and Ananya Gupta each contributed to the dominant win.
