'Cats Take Game One at South Carolina in Extras

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Northwestern picked up its first extra innings win of the 2020 season on Friday afternoon against South Carolina, grabbing the first game of the three-game series 5-2.
Sophomore Mike Doherty got the start on the mound for the Wildcats. Doherty tossed five strong innings and allowed only one run and three hits to go along with six strikeouts.
The Gamecocks got out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after a double down the right field line.
However, that would be the only run South Carolina would put up. The Wildcats put up a game-tying run in the top of the seventh thanks to a two out RBI single from Charlie Maxwell.
Sam Lawrence allowed only a hit in 2 ? innings of work to help send the game to extras.
The game remained tied at the end of nine innings. In the 10th, the 'Cats utilized plate discipline to earn four walks in the inning. After two walks to start the inning, Evan Minarovic picked up his first career RBI in style with a single up the middle.
Shortly thereafter, two more Wildcats watched four balls to put another run across. To top it all off, Casey O'Laughlin got a base knock to drive in two more 'Cats players to make it 5-1.
The Gamecocks were unable to match the four runs, only plating one in the 10th.
The #B1GCats will continue the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT against the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

Senior Charlie Maxwell has gotten a hit in all four games this season.

First-year Evan Minarovic has scored every time he has reached base this year.

Doherty now has two five-inning starts under his belt this year in which he's only given up one run.
This is Northwestern's first game to go to extras in the 2020 campaign.
