No. 9 'Cats Impress at DeCicco Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Northwestern women's fencing team had an another strong dual meet this Saturday at the DeCicco Duals hosted by the University of Notre Dame. Out of their seven opponents, the No. 9 Wildcats only fell short to No. 1 Notre Dame in a close fight.
Besides the Fighting Irish, the 'Cats faced Wayne State, Cleveland State, Denison, Lawrance, Florida and Detroit Mercy.
Jacqueline Hua, Zhesi Zhuang and Adelle Berdichevsky led the Wildcats with nine wins each. First-year Isabelle Banin also impressed with her eight wins.
In the first round, the Wildcats faced Wayne State. With sweeps from Doreen Du, Ananya Gupta, Marta Amador Molina and Hua Northwestern overpowered the Warriors, 21-6.
Next, No. 9 Northwestern beat Cleveland State. First-year foil fencer Isabelle Banin impressed with a 3-0 sweep.
In the third round, 3-0 efforts from saber fencers Hannah Marques, Isabella Min and Hua and foil fencers Sofia Simontov, Elina Moon and Banin led #B1GCats to a 25-2 victory.
'Cats continued to dominate in the fourth round as they took on Lawrance. With sweeps from Jerrica Liao, Berdichevsky and Hua, Northwestern overpowered the Vikings, 17-10.
The only loss of the day came against the Fighting Irish. In a close matchup, despite a sweep from Emma Scala and 2-1 efforts from Abby Tartell, Anna Biasco and Julia Falinska, 'Cats fell short to No. 1 Notre Dame, 13-14.
In the sixth round, Northwestern bounced back quick and racked up another dominant victory against Florida, 25-2.
The 'Cats closed out the weekend strong with another win against Detroit Mercy. Ashley Gomerman, Shirley Luong, Dhruthi Reddy, Zhuang, Du, Berdichevsky and Simontov all contributed to the 24-3 victory with sweeps of their own.
Following DeCicco Duals, the #B1GCats now hold an 19-9 season record.
Chicago's Big Ten team will be back in action this weekend at NU Duals as they host some of the best teams in the country at Ryan Fieldhouse.
