EVANSTON, Ill. -- Combe Family Head Lacrosse Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has been named as this year's recipient of the prestigious Tewaaraton Legends Award.
The award, presented to one recipient annually, honors athletes who played collegiate lacrosse prior to the creation of the Tewaaraton Award in 2001, but would have earned the award should the award have existed during their collegiate career.
Amonte Hiller began her career playing both collegiate lacrosse and soccer at Maryland. As a Terrapin, Amonte Hiller earned All-American honors four times in lacrosse, was selected as the NCAA National Player of the Year in both 1995 and 1996 and was honored the ACC Female Athlete of the Year for all sports in 1996. During her four-year campaign, she broke the school's all-time records for career goals (187), assists (132) and points (319) and won two NCAA Championships.
This collegiate legacy has seen Amonte Hiller named to elite groups of athletes, such as the ACC's 50th Anniversary Women's Lacrosse Team, the NCAA Division I 25th Anniversary Women's Lacrosse Team, and the Sports Illustrated list of Massachusetts' Greatest Sports Figures of the 20th century.
She played as a member of the U.S. national team for over a decade, before joining the U.S. Women's Elite Team in 1997, where she won two IFWLA World Cup Titles and was selected to the All-World Team in 2005.
Amonte Hiller joined Northwestern in 2002 and has since led Northwestern to seven National Champions and a 2019 Big Ten Championship as well as coaching 48 IWLCA All-Americans throughout her 18 years at NU. With her career coaching record standing at 296-78, she has been selected as a four-time IWCLA Coach of the Year and most recently, was head coach for the 2019 World Champion U19 Team USA.
The Wildcats will begin their 2020 season on February 7 against Detroit, where Amonte Hiller will continue to cement her already-expansive legacy as one of the most celebrated figures in women's lacrosse.
