Wildcats Knock Off Tribe 2-1 at Martin Stadium

9/1/2019 3:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern scored two top-notch goals to earn the win against William & Mary, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

The first goal came just two minutes after halftime from junior Mikayla Hampton when she thumped in cross from sophomore Julietta Thron with her head past the Tribe goalkeeper. First year center back Danika Austin was credited with an assist for her excellent distribution to Thron on the break.

The Wildcats picked up their second just minutes later, as first year Aurea Martin found herself on the left wing crowded by a handful of defenders. She glided towards the center of the pitch and uncorked a 25-yard curling effort that rifled into the net off the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Northwestern picked up their first win of the season to move to 1-2-1. The 'Cats head back on the road for two games this week against Cincinnati on Thursday and Harvard on Sunday.
Match Notes
  • The header from Hampton was the second goal of her career, with the first coming against Missouri on Sept, 7, 2017. Thron picked up the fourth assist of her career while Austin earned her first.
  • Martin's world-class strike was the first goal of her young career. She is the second first-year to score for the 'Cats this campaign after Rowan Lapi equalized against Central Michigan on Thursday night. Madi Kennel recorded the first assist of her career.
  • Northwestern outshot William & Mary 12-7 throughout the contest, and could have added a third goal late on an excellent run and pass from first year Paige Miller.
  • Kylie Fisher made her first start of the season in the midfield and the 10th start of her career.
  • Sophomore Mackenzie Wood made three saves in goal.
