EVANSTON, Ill.- A school-record 86 Northwestern student-athletes, across 16 varsity programs, earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten Recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program.
"The young men and women receiving this honor have earned one of the most prestigious academic distinctions in all of college athletics," said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. "At the end of another exceptional year in the classroom, in the community and in competition, a record number of Wildcats being recognized as Distinguished Scholars is an achievement our entire University can be proud of."
Among the 16 Northwestern programs represented, seven teams led their respective Big Ten sports: baseball (six), women's basketball (four), fencing (nine), football (12), lacrosse (13), men's soccer (four) and volleyball (five).
In addition to the distinguished scholar recognitions, Northwestern accumulated 200-plus Academic All-Big Ten awards for the ninth straight year.
