FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The NCAA Championships should presents the nation's best with their biggest challenge of the season and Blessings Golf Club did just that in round one Thursday.
The Northwestern women's golf program opened its seventh-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships by battling the Par-73 course that allowed an average score of 79.95 in the opening round. Senior Stephanie Lau led the Wildcats on day one with a 3-over, 76, and is tied for 19th.

Chicago's Big Ten Team is tied for 11th in the 24-team field after posting an opening round 21-over, 313. The 'Cats are 11 shots off the lead held by No. 2 Texas and No. 10 Arkansas.
Lau and first year Kelly Sim led the Wildcats with three birdies apiece in the opening round. Sim is tied for 27th at 4-over. After opening on the back nine and making the turn at 3-over, Sim played the front nine just 1-over thanks to her third birdie of the day on No. 6.
The Big Ten Player of the Year, Lau opened her tournament with a birdie on the Par 5 10th hole and had a pair of birdies on the front nine. The senior is second in the field in Par 5 scoring at 3-under.
Senior Janet Mao is tied for 53rd at 6-over after shooting 3-over on the front and back. Mao stumbled with back-to-back bogeys on No. 1 and No. 2 to move to 5-over, but closed strong with six pars over her final seven holes, including a par on the last four of the round.
Junior Brooke Riley rounded out the 'Cats' scoring with an 8-over, 81.
NU will tee it up alongside Arizona State and UCLA in the second round Friday at 11:55 a.m.
Teams will play 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday, before the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on one of those teams play an additional 18 holes of stroke play on Monday (May 20). Following that, the individual medalist will be crowned. Eight teams will advance to match play with quarterfinals and semifinals on Tuesday (May 21) and the final two teams will compete for the team championship on Wednesday (May 22).
GOLF Channel will have extensive coverage of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships. Live coverage begins on Monday, May 20 from 3-7 p.m. featuring the final round of stroke play and the awarding of the individual medalist honors. Coverage continues on Tuesday, May 21, from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with the quarterfinals of match play and returns for the match play semifinals from 3-7 p.m. Coverage culminates with the championship match on Wednesday, May 22 from 3-7 p.m. (All times are CT.)
