PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Northwestern took its second-straight series on Saturday afternoon after splitting a doubleheader with Rutgers at Bainton Field.
GAME ONE
The Wildcats won, 4-0, on the back of a tremendous pitching performance. The win sealed the series victory for NU.
Both squads had only four hits in the contest.
Rookie Mike Doherty tossed 8.0-plus innings — a career high — while allowing only four hits and no runs. The pitcher only needed 87 pitches to get through his outing.
He was replaced by Sam Lawrence, who earned his second save in as many days, who tossed a perfect inning.
Outfielder Ben Dickey went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. First baseman Willie Bourbon scored two runs and drew two walks.
NU struck first with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, coming via a Dickey double and a David Dunn sacrifice fly.
Dickey hit another RBI double in the ninth inning, followed by a Michael Trautwein RBI groundout to push the score to 4-0.
The win moved NU's season record to .500, marking the latest in a season that a Wildcat baseball squad has been .500 or better since 2004.
GAME TWO
Despite scoring the final three runs of the game, NU dropped the nightcap to Rutgers, 5-4.
The 'Cats got effective relief in the contest as Jack Pagliarini (3.2 IP), Anthony Alepra (2.0 IP), and Josh Levy (1.0 IP) combined for 6.2 IP of one-run baseball.
David Dunn went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored, while his cousin, Trautwein, went 2-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI.
The Scarlet Knights scored three times in the first inning via a home run, but NU quickly followed up with a run in the top of the second on a Trautwein RBI single.
The Knights proceeded to score one more in the second and one more in the fifth, leading, 5-1.
NU scored twice in the top of the sixth, coming on a David Dunn RBI single and a double play.
The Wildcats threatened in the ninth inning but only scored one run, coming via a Willie Bourbon single.

NU is back in action on Tuesday, May 14, with a mid-week contest against Notre Dame. The game will start at 3:30 p.m. at Rocky & Berenice Miller Park.
