Wildcats Have Stellar Weekend at 2019 U.S. Open

LAS VEGAS — Three Wildcats were crowned champions of the 2019 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships this weekend, highlighted by Ryan Deakin's victory at 70kg in the senior bracket.
In addition to Deakin's victory, two other 'Cats were atop their bracket this weekend, as Yahya Thomas (65kg) and Lucas Davison (92kg) both won the UWW Junior Championships.
Deakin, a World Junior silver winner in 2017, stunned with an 8-6 victory over top-seeded James Green, the four-time All-American from Nebraska.
With Deakin's win, he earned a spot in Final X, a best-of-three series between the two top wrestlers in each World Championships weight class, with winners earning spots on the U.S. Senior World Team to compete at the 2019 Senior World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, on September 14-22, 2019.
Deakin will compete in Final X: Lincoln on Saturday, June 15.
Thomas and Davison receive byes to the finals of the 2019 UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Raleigh, North Carolina, on May 16-18.
Incoming Wildcat Chris Cannon (57kg) placed fourth in his junior bracket. Additionally, current Wildcats Matt Vinci, Michael DeAugustino, Colin Valdiviez, Erich Byelick, Jack Jessen, and Jack Heyob participated in the weekend's competitions.
