EVANSTON, Ill.- The Northwestern men's soccer team will wrap up its spring schedule this weekend as they head to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Xavier. The matchup is set for Saturday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Saturday's game, known as "Devins Game" is Xavier's annual charity game to benefit Down Syndrome research in honor of Devin Fleming, daughter of Xavier Head Coach and former Northwestern assistant coach, Andy Fleming.
"We are honored to be a part of 'Devin's Game' at Xavier. It is a great cause and we are proud to support Andy and his family," said head coach Tim Lenahan.
Earlier this spring, the Wildcats visited Spain and England for a once-in-a-lifetime trip as they took on competition in Madrid, Spain and Liverpool, England as well as tour some of the world's most premiere training facilities.
The 'Cats opened play with a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid U18's on March 26 . Senior Mac Mazzola and product of Real Madrid Academy, sophomore Jose Del Valle scored goals. Three days later, the Wildcats traveled to England to take on a highly talented Liverpool U23 team that featured international soccer phenom, Rhian Brewster who also led England to the U-17 World Cup two years ago.
"Playing against that competition in those environments was beyond a thrill and the fact that we competed well against top teams adds to that experience. The spring is about player development and also players stepping into increased roles in the team. I saw that from a lot of our guys," added Lenahan.
Following their trip to Europe, the Wildcats hit the ground running, defeating DePaul to advance to the Chicago Cup final in Ryan Fieldhouse and Wilson Field where the #B1GCats took home the title in a 2-1 victory over Loyola.
