‘Cats Upset No. 37 Golden Gophers in Season Finale, 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern upset No. 37 Minnesota Sunday afternoon in the final match of the regular season, 4-3.
The Wildcats took the doubles point with wins from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions after Minnesota jumped out to an early lead, winning at the No. 2 position. In the No. 1 spot, juniors Chris Ephron and Dominik Stary took down the Gopher doubles team of Krstanovic and Milecevic, 6-2 to help put the 'Cats in the position to win the doubles point. Senior Ben Vandixhorn and first-year Simen Bratholm were able to capitalize for NU, defeating Lobak and Alpeza, 7-6.
The Golden Gophers won the first point of singles play with a win from #123 Stefan Milicevic at the No. 2 position. Trice Pickens was the first 'Cat to get on the board from No. 6 singles. The first-year defeated the Eli Ogilvy in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 to give NU a 2-1 lead in the match.
From the No. 1 position, Stary brought the 'Cats within one of clinching, dropping #85 Josip Krstanovic in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Minnesota took the next point to bring the Gophers back within one at 3-2. Ephron clinched the match for the #B1GCats, defeating Alpeza after dropping the first set 5-7, 6-3, 7-6.
The Wildcats will be back on the court next weekend for the 2019 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Michigan. No. 7 Northwestern will begin play Thursday afternoon at 2 pm ET as they take on No. 10 Purdue at University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
