MAINEVILLE, Ohio – Mother nature was not kind to the field in the opening round of the Big Ten Championships at TPC River's Bend Friday.

With steady rain and wind gusts upward of 30 miles per hour, the Northwestern women's golf team battled the elements and the 6,357-yard course en route to a 14-over opening round. Illinois leads the field after one round at 3-over.

Senior Stephanie Lau led the Wildcats with a 2-over, 74, while a trio of 'Cats — junior Brooke Riley, senior Janet Mao and first year Kelly Sim — each shot 4-over. Melani Putri (Purdue), Kornkamol Sukaree (Illinois) and Kari Bellville (Indiana) were the only players to shoot under par in the opening round and lead the field at 1-under.

Lau was second in the field in par-3 scoring at 2-under and was sixth with 13 pars, but suffered a double bogey on No. 9 to finish the opening round tied for 14th at 2-over. The Fullerton, California, native bounced back nicely from the double on No. 9, making one of just seven birdies by the field on No. 12 en route to an even-par, 36, on the back nine.

Mao and Riley each made important birdies heading in on the back nine and are tied for 33rd at 4-over. Riley hit a beautiful tee shot to 10 feet on the par-3, 170-yard, 16th hole to convert her only birdie of the day. Riley was one of just eight players to make birdie on No. 16. Mao's final birdie of the day came on par-5, 477-yard, 18th hole. The senior had made back-to-back bogeys on No. 16 and No. 17 to fall to 5-over, but hit her approach shot to just inside 10 feet before burying the putt for a birdie.

Sim led the Wildcats with three birdies in her first appearance at the Big Ten Championships. She opened her round with a birdie on No. 1 and bounced back with a critical birdie on the par-5 eighth hole after dropping a pair of shots with a double bogey at No. 7.

The Wildcats will tee off at 8:30 a.m. CT on Saturday alongside Minnesota and Maryland.
