EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore student-athletes had the opportunity to explore different possible career paths with the help of Northwestern alumni last week during the Sophomore Industry Exploration Night at the Walter Athletic Center.

Each year, student-athletes have the opportunity to meet with a variety of industry leading alumni across nine professional fields to network and ask questions.

"Events like this are an awesome opportunity to not only emphasize the importance networking, but practice our networking with alums who truly care about us," said football player Joe Spivak. "The opportunity to look at different industries is really valuable and knowing that if you're not completely sure of what you want to do, that's perfectly fine. Seeing alums who were in a similar position and maybe didn't know what they wanted to do, but ended up making it to this point in their careers is very encouraging."

The sophomores in attendance were able to meet with professions within engineering, consulting, marketing/communications, finance/real estate, healthcare, and start up/tech.

Alumni that attended this year's events including Cameron Dickerson (Football/BOA), Meghan McKeown (Women's Basketball/WISH-TV), Mary Orders (Cross Country/NBC Sports), Megan Jamieson (Field Hockey/Nike), Mary Erikson (Women's Soccer/ United Airlines), Greg Latterman (Aware Records) and Prince Kwateng (Football/SproutSocial)

"My biggest takeaway from the alums is that passion is a really genuine thing that comes across in the profession that you choose," shared sophomore fencer Sarah Filby. "Knowing that you might take a few jobs to work up to the one that you really want is great experience and can be rewarding when you're working towards that goal."

Events like the Sophomore Industry Exploration Night are a part of the NU for Life programming within the Northwestern athletic department which provides student-athletes the resources to excel professionally after their athletic careers. Other events hosted by NU for Life include the Wildcat Professional Excellence Program (WPEP), which gives junior student-athletes a similar chance to network, and the announcement of the annual Kabiller Award, which offers standout student-athletes a $5,000 grant for use in professional development.
