No. 2 Northwestern Sends 11 to NCAA Midwest Regionals

EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 2 Northwestern women's fencing team continues its postseason run this Saturday at the Midwest Regionals hosted by Notre Dame, in which eleven fencers look to secure berths in the NCAA Championships.

Emine Yücel, Maddy Curzon, and Alexis Browne will represent the 'Cats in saber. Yvonne Chart, Sarah Filby, Amy Jia, and Alyssa Chen will compete in foil, while Ella Lombard, Pauline Hamilton, Julia Falinska, and Maggie Snider will do so in epée.

The format of the Regionals is a round-robin among all the fencers within a specific weapon group, with the point differential in bouts factoring into final rankings. The top four fencers in saber, the top five in foil, and the top five in epee, based on a combination of Regional results and regular season results, will qualify for the NCAA Championships at Cleveland State on March 23-24.

"Our team has trained hard and is ready for NCAA Regionals," said head coach Zach Moss. "We enter with the goal to qualify six against some strong competition, but our team is up to the challenge. I'm excited to see them perform."

Northwestern will look to bring home more hardware to Evanston after winning its second consecutive Midwest Fencing Conference championship. All three weapon groups took home titles for the first time in school history. The team championship followed a remarkable duals season where NU earned its highest-ever ranking at No. 2 in the nation and highest winning percentage (.886) since 2009-10.

Adding to that, all eleven competing fencers earned All-MFC recognitions. Hamilton, Snider, Filby, Chart, and Browne took home First Team honors, Falinska, Chen, Jia, Curzon, and Yücel earned Second Team honors, and Lombard was named an Honorable Mention.

Prior to securing the team title, six 'Cats earned medals during the individual events at the MFC Championships. Hamilton earned a silver medal and Snider took home the bronze in epée, Filby and Chart both took home bronze medals in foil, and Browne earned a bronze of her own in saber.

Hamilton's 38 duals wins led all NU fencers this season. Close behind are Filby and Yücel with 37 wins apiece. Snider's 35 wins led all first-years and rank third overall on the squad.
