EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern continued its astounding WNIT postseason run on Saturday night as they rallied back in the second half for the third-consecutive game in a thrilling 61-58 victory over Ohio in front of an electric crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Wildcats trailed by as many as eight points in the second half before mounting a 9-2 run in the final four minutes of the game to come away with the victory.
Lindsey Pulliam led the way for the 'Cats as she poured in a game-high 22 points, including 14 in the second half. This marks the 12th time this season that Pulliam has scored at least 20 points and NU holds a 11-1 record in those games. She also finished with a career-high 12 made free throws, going 12-of-15 at the line.
Veronica Burton continued her impressive postseason play on both sides of the floor as she scored 15 points while adding seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. The first-year from Newton, Mass. gave the Wildcats a one point lead with 1:09 left in the game after coming up with a steal and then sinking a pair of free throws. Burton finished the night 6-of-8 from the charity stripe, the third-straight game in which she has sunk at least six free throws.
Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds while finishing with nine points. The senior center has grabbed double-digit rebounds in all four of the Wildcats' postseason games. Jordan Hamilton finished with nine points, including seven in the second half to help pull the Wildcats within one possession on multiple occasions late in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats ramped up their defensive efforts in the second quarter as they held Ohio scoreless for over three minutes midway through the second quarter. NU entered the half trailing by two, 33-31. Pulliam started the second half scorching hot, sinking her first three shots and scoring 10 of the Wildcats' first 12 points in the second frame.
Northwestern's defense caused four turnovers over the final 3:30 of the game to help seize momentum and the victory. The #B1GCats also outrebounded the Bobcats 15-4 over the final frame.
As a team, the Wildcats went 23-of-29 from the charity stripe, one shy of their most free throws made in a game this season. The 'Cats also came through when it counted, making their final seven shots from the line to close the game out.
This continues the furthest run the Wildcats have made it in the postseason during the Joe McKeown era. Next up, Chicago's Big Ten Team will face the winner of tomorrow's Georgetown/James Madison game. Stay tuned to NUSports.com for updates on the time and location of the semifinal matchup.
